All About Espresso

From coffee shops to ready-to-drink beverages, espresso is taking the world by storm. According to a recent report from the National Coffee Association, 24% of Americans surveyed had consumed an espresso-based beverage within the past day!

But what is espresso? And what’s the difference between espresso and coffee?

Espresso is the purest distillation of the coffee bean. It doesn’t refer to a bean or blend, but actually the preparation method.

With an Italian origin, espresso was created because cafes needed a faster way to serve coffee to customers. Before espresso, it could take up to five minutes to make one cup. But espresso, the Italian word for “fast”, takes only 45 seconds! Espresso is traditionally brewed in machines that generate up to 15 atmospheres of pressure to force pressurized hot water over coffee grounds to create a concentrated, deep, full-bodied coffee.

The main difference between espresso and drip coffee is the brewing time and the fineness of the coffee beans.

In espresso, there are many variables that go into each shot: water temperature, water pressure and how smooth the grind is. The finer the grounds are, the slower the espresso comes out. On the other hand, drip coffee is made with a coarser coffee. The water filters through the ground beans and falls into the pot. This takes more time than espresso and the water is in longer contact with the coffee.

Though many think otherwise, drip coffee typically has more caffeine than a shot of espresso. An 8-ounce cup of coffee can have between 70 and 140 mg of caffeine, while a 1.5-ounce espresso shot averages 60 to 80 mg.
