INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF COFFEE WITH WORLD COFFEE RESEARCH

Community Coffee is a proud founding member of World Coffee Research (WCR). Today we continue supporting their mission: to grow, protect, and enhance supplies of quality coffee while improving the livelihoods of the families who produce it.

WHY WE SUPPORT WCR

In 2012, we helped create WCR as the only global coordinator of agricultural research and development for coffee farmers.

Over a decade later ‐ with support from Community Coffee and 190+ other coffee roasters, suppliers, and allied companies across 30 countries ‐ WCR develops and distributes climate-resilient coffee varieties.

These innovations help farmers meet common challenges like changes in weather patterns, pests, and diseases. WCR's work also protects natural resources, improving the overall long-term sustainability of coffee production.

"We’re asking these farmers to invest their livelihood into growing and harvesting coffee. [WCR] allows them to do that with more confidence,” says fifth-generation Community Coffee owner Matt Saurage Jr. “Their investments are safer. They have a reason to stay in coffee, and ultimately this will give them a reason to warrant a higher price — to bring more wealth to their communities and their families."

BETTER FOR FARMERS, BETTER FOR YOU

WCR's work also results in a higher-quality end product for coffee drinkers. "Great coffee starts with great coffee beans," says fourth-generation owner Matt Saurage ‐ and a sustainable crop means a steady supply of great-tasting coffee in your cup.

The first waves of new WCR coffee varieties will arrive at farms across the globe as early as 2036 as the organization races to accelerate timelines in plant breeding. From there, WCR's long-term plan is to deliver approved varieties to farmers every 3 years.

Through membership in WCR, Community Coffee is investing in the future of coffee for everyone: farming families, roasters around the world, and you.

"Community Coffee has been a foundational leader in this work because they're so committed to the families that produce coffee," says WCR CEO Vern Long. "They recognize the value of bringing together families not just across the US, but also as a bridge to coffee producers around the world that provide this amazing beverage for all of us to enjoy."
