WHY WE UPDATED THE NAMES & DESIGNS

With this update, these coffees now have the same names as they do in our other packaging formats (reclosable ground and whole-bean bags, K-Cup® pods, and instant jars).

This is meant to make it easier for you to find your favorite coffee, no matter which type of packaging you like.

Though we've called certain blends by different names depending on packaging format, the coffees themselves have always been the same.

For instance, packs labeled “Medium Roast” (vacuum-sealed) and “Breakfast Blend” (all other packaging formats) have always contained the same blend of coffees, roasted to the same color and ground to the same level. This is also true for Dark Roast and Signature Blend, as well as Between Roast and Café Special®.

So, why were the names ever different? That's a story of our evolution over the decades.

When we pioneered vacuum-sealed bags in 1980, we referred to the coffees inside by their roast level. But by the time we introduced our reclosable bags in 2010, the coffee world had changed.

We had begun offering a variety of coffees within each roast level, which meant we could no longer name them by just their roast. To help customers understand the differences between our many coffees, we introduced new names like Breakfast Blend and Signature Blend.

During that transition, we kept the original names and designs on our vacuum-sealed packaging only. We're updating them now because it's time for us to evolve again, just like we did in 1980 and 2010.

A LEGACY OF COFFEE INNOVATION

In 1980, Community Coffee became the first company to successfully introduce vacuum-sealed bags in North America. Third-generation owner H. Norman Saurage III pioneered the iconic “firm pack” to preserve our fresh-roasted flavor for longer, allowing us to share Community Coffee with more families than ever before.

We've carried on that spirit of innovation throughout the years, all the way to the reclosable “soft pack” coffee bags you can also find today.

Our reclosable bags use newer methods for exceptional freshness, quality, and taste in every cup. They have a one-way gas valve that allows us to package coffee immediately after roasting and grinding, locking in freshness at its peak. This newer packaging format also has tin ties that make the bag reclosable.

No matter which type of packaging you prefer, you'll always enjoy that distinct Community Coffee taste and freshness in every cup.

Former Blend Name
Updated Blend Name
Medium Roast
Between Roast
Dark Roast
Coffee & Chicory
N/A (name did not change)

Does the updated name mean the coffee is different?

No, these coffees are the exact same as they were in the packaging you're used to. We haven't changed the blend, roast level, grind, or vacuum-sealed freshness for any of these coffees.

  • Breakfast Blend is the same as Medium Roast
  • Café Special® is the same as Between Roast
  • Signature Blend is the same as Dark Roast
  • Coffee & Chicory has the same name but an updated design

Why did you update the names of these blends?

This update gives these coffees the same names they have on our other packaging formats (reclosable ground and whole-bean bags, K-Cup® pods, and instant jars).

Our intention is to make it easier for you to find your favorite coffee, no matter which type of packaging you prefer.

Though the names and designs have changed, the fresh coffees inside taste the exact same as they did before (and currently do in other types of packaging). There are no changes to their blends, roast levels, grinds, or vacuum-sealed freshness.

Were your vacuum-sealed coffees always the same as your coffees in other packaging formats? Why did they have different names?

Yes, the coffees have always been the same across our different packaging styles.

For example, packs labeled “Medium Roast” (vacuum-sealed) and “Breakfast Blend” (all other packaging formats) have always contained the same blend of coffees, roasted to the same color and ground to the same level. This is also true for Dark Roast and Signature Blend, as well as Between Roast and Café Special®.

Until now, we called the same blends by different names depending on the packaging format and when it was introduced.

Is the packaging itself different? Is my coffee still vacuum-sealed?

Though the packaging is different, it's still vacuum-sealed for freshness and your experience with it will be the same. You'll still hear the signature "whoosh" and see the hard pack turn soft when opened.

Will my coffee still be as fresh as it used to be?

Yes, our coffees are as fresh as ever. Though we’ve updated their names and designs, the packaging and coffee inside are still vacuum-sealed for freshness.

All our coffee packages are specifically designed to seal in fresh flavor. Our reclosable “soft” bags, for example, have a one-way gas valve that allows us to package coffee immediately after roasting and grinding, locking in peak freshness. These bags also come with tin ties that let you reclose the bag after opening to preserve that freshness.

To maintain maximum freshness as long as possible, we recommend storing opened bags of any kind in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

Do I have to brew this coffee differently, and does it yield the same amount of coffee? What about storage?

These updated packages contain the same amount of coffee as before, and they yield the same number of cups using the same brewing method you're used to. We recommend using 2 heaping tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 ounces of filtered water, but you may brew to the strength you like.

As for storage, we recommend storing opened bags in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
