Our new Grandma’s Sugar Cookie flavored coffee has the sweet, buttery taste of homemade sugar cookies fresh out the oven — a nostalgic nod to a classic holiday treat.
In the spirit of sharing holiday sweetness, here’s a special sugar cookie recipe for you to try at home, courtesy of third-generation Community Coffee owner Donna Saurage.
“I have made these cookies (usually with help from little hands) since 1958,” says Saurage, the namesake of our limited-edition Grandma’s Sugar Cookie coffee. “They are a tradition in our family.”
Now you can share this tradition with your family as well! This recipe makes about 8 dozen cookies, which can be glazed or decorated with icing to add some extra Christmas cheer.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup margarine or butter*
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1 ½ cups sugar
- 3 eggs
- 3 ½ cups flour
- 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
*You may use shortening and increase salt to 1 teaspoon.
Instructions:
- With mixer (electric or by hand), cream together margarine and vanilla. Add sugar gradually, creaming till light and fluffy.
- Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition.
- Sift dry ingredients together. Add gradually to creamed mixture. Dough should be soft, but you may add a little more flour if it is too sticky.
- Refrigerate dough in a clean bowl, covered, for 4 hours or overnight. (If using shortening, there’s no need to refrigerate before baking.) Dough will keep in the refrigerator for a couple of days.
- After refrigerating, roll out dough to 1/8–1/4 inch on a well-floured surface. Roll out one portion at a time, leaving the rest in the refrigerator (dough must be kept cold).
- Cut dough with cookie cutters and place on ungreased cookie sheets. Sprinkle with colored sugar if desired. Bake at 375°F for 6–10 minutes, until very lightly browned.
- Remove with spatula to rack or counter immediately. Cool completely before enjoying or storing in an airtight container.
